The City of San Jose del Monte, Bulacan is celebrating its 5th Annual
Tanglawan Festival this coming First Week of September 2020. The Tanglawan
Festival is an initiative of Congresswoman Florida P. Robes and the people of
San Jose del Monte, a week-long festivity commemorating the Cityhood of San
Jose Del Monte.
From the word “Ilaw” or light, the Tanglawan Festival symbolizes the
light that will guide the San Joseños to a more sustainable city. The festival aims
to promote San Jose del Monte as “The Rising City” with the potential of
becoming the premiere city of Bulacan. Tanglawan Festival boasted not only
the city’s colorful culture and tradition, but also the exceptional traits of its
locals. Said festival was offered to St. Joseph the Worker, the light who guides
the San Joseños.
Tanglawan was inspired by the tale of the origins of San Jose del Monte
that tells of a lumberjack who got lost in the woods. After praying solemnly, a
divine light; a glowing statue of St. Joseph led him out of the forest. Apart from
this, Tanglawan was inspired by the city’s contemporary history that shines
bright with the light of progress through the grace of God.
Moreover, it is the goal of the festival to gather San Joseños, who came
from different cultural backgrounds and to break barriers through the festival’s
spirit of fellowship in order to make the City of San Jose del Monte a more
harmonious and vibrant community to live in.
Last 2017, in celebration of the 2nd Tanglawan Festival, the Rising City of
San Jose del Monte achieved its first Guinness World Record for the Largest
Lantern Parade with 14,173 participants that used eco-friendly lanterns. This
was followed with another Guinness World Record in 2019 for the Most Living
Figures in a Nativity Scene with 2,101 participants.
The successful celebration of Tanglawan Festival is evident with the awards it
received from Aliw Awards Foundation, a national award giving body for live
entertainment. The Tanglawan Festival of the Rising City of San Jose del Monte
was awarded Best Festival Practices and Performances. Also our City Mayor,
Hon. Arturo B. Robes, was awarded as Best Festival Catalyst and Organizer.
